Free Offerings for Furloughed Workers

Furloughed workers will get a little relief around Alexandria.

Pork Barrel BBQ Restaurant (2312 Mount Vernon Avenue) announced that it would offer free pulled pork sandwiches to furloughed federal employees for as long as the government shutdown lasts.

Owners Bill Blackburn and “Mango” Mike Anderson published this statement on their Facebook page around 10:30 on Tuesday, January 2:

“We are all in.

We been getting questions about shutdown sandwiches. Starting today we are offering all out of work, furloughed federal government employees (and out of work federal contractors) a free pulled pork sandwich. We hope to see this end soon, the offer is good until this shutdown is over.”

Another generous offer comes from Diya Indian Cuisine (218 N Lee St 2nd Floor).  They are offering free buffet lunches to any Federal Government employee during the shutdown. This offer is available every weekday (Monday to Friday) from 11 am to 1 pm starting January 2nd, 2019 and ending January 11th, 2019 to any person who shows a current Federal Government employment ID.

And if you have always wanted to learn to knit, Fibre Space (1319 Prince Street) is offering knitting classes for furloughed federal workers.  Sessions run Wednesday through Friday at 2 pm and another at 3 pm. If you can knit but need to learn purl and ribbing, come at 3:30!  For those who can knit and purl already, they will add brioche classes next week!

Great offers all around!

Catch on the Ave. is here

Del Ray now has an option for fresh-caught seafood and craft cocktails when Catch On The Ave. opened this week. The new restaurant from Common Plate Hospitality opened at 2419 Mount Vernon Avenue.

Chef Eric Reid, formerly at now-shuttered Reserve in D.C., also runs the kitchen at months-old sister spot Augie’s Mussel House nearby.   His offerings at Catch all sound amazing.

Entrees such as beer-battered cod and chips, fish and grits, and pecan-crusted mahi mahi are offered. Brunch features tuna ribs, bacon cinnamon roll, barbecue octopus, and (wait for it) buttermilk biscuits with crab fat butter.

The family-friendly eatery will also serve a “Build Your Own Bento” kid’s menu featuring a choice of protein and three sides.

Hours will be Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Alexandria natives Chad Sparrow, Justin Sparrow, and Larry Walston opened Mason Social nearby in 2015 and Augie’s Mussel House this summer.  Later this winter, the group plans to open Urbano 116, a traditional Mexican restaurant helmed by award-winning chef and Noma alum Alam Méndez Florián of Mexico City.
