With their pitching strained to the limit by back-to-back games, Pioneer Roofing could not keep up with Del Ray Pizza on Saturday, losing 26-4. The loss gave the Pioneers a 4-3 record at the midpoint of the season.
DRP jumped out to a 6-run lead in the first inning, getting four singles and two walks off starter Jack Kelly and benefiting from some sloppy Pioneer defense. Five more DRP hits in the second inning, including a double and two triples, put the Pioneers down 10-1 before they could record a hit of their own.
The Pioneer Roofing offense finally broke through in the fourth inning, when a leadoff single by Kelly and a walk by Ben Wilson were followed by Pierce Yao’s fourth homer of the season. Those were the last runs your Pioneers would score, however, as the DRP pitchers only allowed two more hits—singles from Michaela Mannel and Yao—for the remainder of the game.
Kelly was charged with the loss, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) in four innings of work. He walked one and struck out six, leaving the game after facing two batters in the fifth inning. With no more of the Pioneers’ regular pitchers available, DRP took advantage of 12 walks to plate 14 more runs in the inning.
